repress 2016 ...linkwood gives us whats up with the underground? hot, urgent, joyous jazz/house music thats guaranteed to ignite any dancefloor be warned, spontaneous human combustion is a real risk when this record hits. fudge fingas drops the heavyweight ‘escape. with samples from cult tv series ‘the prisoner, huge synth lines and beats like vintage glenn underground this is definitely odd house music turn it up! the complainers bacon rolls is bizarre funk from somewhere else entirely if chris cunningham made a porno flick then this would be the soundtrack. plus theres extra sickness from whats up with the beats? (rather than a mere dub, this is almost an entirely different jump-up disco track) and a bonus firecracker skit.

rediscovered 80’s british acid house gem ‘cortina kidz’ recently made a serious impact on andy butler’s mr. intl with remixes from factory floor and juan maclean & tim sweeney. hot on the heels, moscow’s lipelis’ steps in to remix with striking results. pitchfork enthused of the recent reissue being “a chilly acid-house track operating the influence of both soft cell and the specials,’ xlr8r as “drenched in dark and sleazy overtones, the track encapsulates a downtrodden time in london”, while ransom note noted “cortina kidz is more than just an old skool oddity- it s a banger that s stood the test of time”. originally recorded on london’s stoke newington road in 1987, produced by a young tim brinkhurst ahead of his imminent record deal with virgin records with his band soho, and long before his current role as manager of mercury prize winners, young fathers, ‘cortina kidz’ remained undiscovered and the eccentric spoken word overlay and weird lead vocal made it very unlike the prevailing dance music sound of the time. leonid lipelis explains that “since it’s a reissue of a relatively unknown record it gave me a certain freedom of expression (when it’s something well known and classic you re likely to produce something more serious). i came up with more of a pop song, structured with a vocoder for the main version and had fun playing with vocal samples for the dub mix, paying homage to the 80s sound in both.- lipelis’ recent release on lies records has gained him support from four tet to dimitri from paris. he also runs a side project for hardware jams called tmo and co-runs low budget family records.

birdsmakingmachine are back on track and continuing their series in style with bmm 007. kicking off things on a1, at 124 bpm, “the draft” is a joyful number that bursts with relentless energy while managing to fuse sharp metallic drum patterns with juggling ambient hooks. the more dancefloor-oriented track is nevertheless found on a2. as the title suggests, “area 52” is quite literally a journey through the unknown and mysterious, a metaphor for the deep minimal house amazon, a track that stands out with an extra subby bassline, swinging hihats and those ever-so-warm sequenced analog pads in the background. flip the record over and you find yourself with two slightly more industrial affairs, “the voice of kudha” on b1 offering a breakier alternative than it’s predecessors and “zagonity”, on b2, galloping its way to close off the record with shuffling vocal hits and an amalgamation of bouncing hats and snares.

argentine producer leonel castillo unveils yet another moniker with this new eponymous 77ks series. remaining the best-kept secret the latin american electronic music scene has brought to us so far, leonel is an icon and at the same time virtually unknown. a stylistic chameleon and an ultra talented jack-of-all-trades, he is hard to pinpoint, and even harder to categorize. surfacing at random, he’s been releasing music as leonel castillo and under various aliases – arnold slab, boeing or unknown artista are some of his monikers – on labels as diverse as ilian tape, sushitech, airdrop and his own imprint groovear.

goncalo salgado aka lake haze first came onto the scene in 2014, with a release on dj haus’s ­ unknown to the unknown imprint. since his impressive inception to the scene, lake haze’s sound has developed and evolved massively, so much so, that in 2015 he created an incredible offering for dutch label creme organisation, which featured a legowelt remix. the four track ep, features dark synthy productions on the a side, with more club friendly acid cuts on the flip. packaged in full sleeve artwork, limited press.

great debut release and new label from a rubadub shop regular featuring tracks from shop regulars. tip. this first release is made up of 3 tracks from my friends and 1 from myself. there’s no concept here other than putting out music that was otherwise not going to see the light of day. the first track is by bleaker who put out a 12inch on unknown to the unknown last year, the second by miz aka big miz whos been putting out music on dixon avenue basement jams, the third by the burrell connection who has a release on west end communications and a track on a craig knows released compilation and the last track is from myself which got a play on big mizs boiler room set. these tracks were all sent to me around the same time and it felt right to make a place for them on a record. bleaker, miz and the burrell connection have all been making waves in scotland and beyond and these 3 tracks are proof that the attention is warranted. and i dont think my track is too bad either.

mindtrip presents mt13, which sees another young argentinan talent - farceb - making his mindtrip debut. farceb is a producer whos been pricking ears over the last couple of years with strong releases on labels such as arts, orioni and circular limited. he now joins pfirters imprint with his superb signals from space ep. exoplanet war sets things in motion and is a stylish, entrancing tune, which, if it wasnt for its intrinsic energy and power - would border on the somniferous. next up is signals from space, a tough, brutal and percussive workout, punctuated by dark, organic synth stabs. this track builds and rolls along in a way dancefloors will love. unknown shadow is a powerful, stripped down merciless lump of peak-time techno which cleverly blends atmosphere and hard hitting percussion. the final track - the superb hyperion, is a 6 minute, deadly exercise in pushing intensity and tension to (and sometimes beyond) commonsensical limits. this is mindtrip music!

aimes brings everything good to this release from sun-kissed synths to chimes lapping around your dancing feet, this sort of post-disco can be found on “pleasure cruise-. on the flip, “acid dreaming” is an electro- futurist vision of the journey beyond consciousness to realms unknown. out on the tugboat edit spin-off star creature.

2016 repress , legendary deeply rooted house records comes with a new serie releases called rootstrax. first ep is by a mysterious french artist that remains unknown for now. however, the listener that knows a bit about the french house music history can easily define the roots of the producer (not saying he can point out who he is :-) the influences of early 90s fcom/fnac sound is present combined with some classic chicago house... this is exactly the concept of rootstrax. interesting concept and cool record that makes us wonder if this has been dome by an old fox or a young puppy producer? for sure this sounds very mature and delivers 12inch extraordinaire!

for the 5th installment in the prrukwht series, spanish hardware icon eduardo de la calle returns to planet rhythm with his adept to the light ep. tr3b conspiracy serves as the opener which combines odd rhythmic arps and subtly placed drum sequences to make a somewhat uncanny atmosphere. on the b side we find ranchor will cut the mood which is a repetitive techno cut that should be useful for after hours. the doubt of the unknown (b2) has a somewhat foreboding title. it’s a fx heavy synth jam that uses oddball synthesis and nicely placed fx chains that evolve throughout.

this first release from parisian crew deviant disco, reflects the spirit of their parties and their tastes. open minded diggers, looking for unknown gems to share, this maxi is aimed for djs with a wide range of style : from afrobeat to newbeat, or balearic, italo disco, proto-house, with their french touch and sunny vibe, this tracks will make the dancefloor burn.

april will see alex danilov, notable dj and producer from yekaterinburg, release his music on arma. published along with reshape by fred p., three original tracks constitute the noises ep — the second release of the label in 2016. being welcomed to diverse clubs throughout russia and europe, alex danilov has all the experience needed to know how dance music works. his own productions are about finding the way to sustain deep mystic atmosphere within signature low-pass rhythm picture. side b, containing both original and remix of unknown numbers, shows how this approach varies from classy style of fred p. aka black jazz consortium. noises ep is the 12th release by arma. the cover features artwork by p.kuznetsov.

high mobility weapons unit continues its exploration, entering an unknown solar system and landing on a desolate mining planet. the counter rockets ep is the second release on the imprint, drawing influences from heavier, lo-fi territories, whilst still maintaining hmwu s characteristic space techno sound. the a-side starts off with the title track, counter rockets , which is a dj tool that combines functional bleeps with machine processed percussion. a2 serves up abandoned interstellar tomb , a fusion of atmospheric deep space bass and jacking drum patterns. on the b-side, deep sea deposit kicks things off with a poly-woven synth line that contorts and shifts throughout the track. finally, excavation site rolls along with its muted melodies and haunting fx, all built above a floor of sub-bass.

lost trax embody the idea of underground techno. the shadowy group, members unknown, began their music careers over 20 years ago. output may be low, but quality is high, the style being no compromise techno brilliance. and thats whats on show here. kick drums and squirming acid bars are at the core of faith, a track where soaring strings shift and reshape. the chiselled claps and barbed bass of flatliner follows, taking its cue from the heyday of detroit. a watery world of analogue abstraction greets the listener on the flip, lost being an atmospheric journey into to the squelching swamps of the tb303. sniping beats introduce the lush tones of renderer. blurring the lines of electro and techno the track is an elegant end to an ep of deep and dense layers.

through shards of frozen soundscapes, boss006 defrosts the stockholm sound with the bm debut of kalawila, whose ample use of sparse building techniques creates a rigid and tight groove structure. this subtle attitude fueled two tracker is what s up in 2016, especially in the bossmusik hometown of stockholm: the extended aside grasps intelligence while swiftly pushing forward. as for the flipside, this intergalactic adventure shares tight resemblance to the mystery unknown atmosphere of bossmusik s sonic universe, and sums up this little bomb in a clever and rewarding way... watch out!

in 1972 francois de roubaix and bernard maitre composed together the music of a tv series for children presented by puppets, called the onix. the musical oddity here released by weme records is a part of this ost. this piece of music demonstrates once again that francois de roubaix was in touch with all kinds of music of his time, including contemporary music. in this experimental track we can feel the influences of the composer pierre henry, an other explorer of unknown sounds. on the b side jodey kendrick makes his own interpretation of this music with current tech and sounds while keeping the atmosphere and fantasy of the original sound. attention non music !

chupacabras and brother y join forces to form the debut vinyl release from tutamen. brooklyn resident and elusive production talent chupacabras offers up two machine-powered cosmic cuts, expanding upon the territory explored with his contributions to the tutamen tape series and last years ep for go finger. the as-yet unknown brother y makes a first appearance with two hypnotic numbers on the b-side.

having previously used their dnuos ytivil offshoot to release material from their nearest and dearest (think batu, bruce, hodge and alex coulton), bristol’s livity sound crew turns to unknown french producer simo cell. the two tracks showcased here are a rather fine introduction to this newcomer, with opener “piste jaune” offering a clandestine blend of stuttering electro bass, discordant analogue percussion hits and spooky electronics. the mystery man goes for the jugular on “cellar door”, with pitched-down, bleep style melodies and liquid electronics riding an off-kilter, broken techno groove. another fine livity release.

repress !! having wowed critics and crate-diggers alike with 2012s acclaimed magik cyrkles compilation, psychemagik are now ready to unleash the follow-up, magik sunrise. bristling with psychedelic, cosmic and curiously balearic oddities hand-picked from the depths of their vast record collections, magik sunrise is, if anything, even more inspired that its predecessor.
given that magik cyrkles was widely considered to be one of the best compilations of 2012, that is some feat. that collection garnered praise across the board, appearing in the end-of-year charts of rough trade, juno and piccadilly records. as if that wasnt enough, dj magazine also described it as f***ing great! for magik sunrise, the kent-based duo has dug even deeper into the dusty corners of their record vault, deep in the cosmic forest. the result is another inspired, 15-track collection that gleefully skips between all manner of forgotten gems and little-known nuggets, occasionally stopping to acclaim an otherwise unknown track or artist.

a new year brings with it a new anoma. our third aural artifact is crafted by multi-faceted artisan radiq and features the vivacious vocals of do mi. the japanese artists composition hovers in the ether between jazz and electronic music and is coaxed through the scales in radiant fashion by miss mi. the groove and sonic elation of side a s used world propel the listener to a luscious cloud where you float on the voice to a destination unknown. follow-up track sugar roads is a saucy adventure down a brazen path that twists and turns with rhythm and a touch of vulnerable desire. etched onto the b-side is a drum-heavy statement enveloped in rich phonic elements and bolstered by a spectacular keys performance. raza bounces headstrong into an effervescent dome of glee, guided by the whisper of spoken words. laucolos colourful splash -verts- is the leaf-like mural that shrouds the 12inch vinyl treat.
